The academic arm of SURGIL was officially recognized in August 2023, although it had been active for some time. The Academic arm of SURGIL is committed to hosting webinars, seminars, workshops in order to guide aspiring surgeons on their pathways to achieving the best possible career in surgery.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ACADEMIC COMMITTEEBefore its official recognition, the Academic Committee organized a series of impactful events designed to foster interest and knowledge in various surgical specialties. These events, such as “So You Wanna Be a Surgeon: Neurosurgery”, “So You Wanna Be a General Surgeon”, “So You Wanna Be a Surgeon: Cardiothoracic”, provided in-depth insights into specific fields within surgery. Other events like, like “Learn with Surgery” and “Tech in Surgery”, offered general educational content and showcased technological advancements in surgical practice.
Since becoming an official committee, several ground-breaking events have been held, such as Surgical Skills Lab 1.0 and 2.0, hand-on workshops that provided attendees with practical skills in surgical techniques. Additionally, a webinar titled Carving Career Paths: The Surgeon’s Blueprint focused on career development in surgery, with an emphasis on plastic surgery. These events not only enhanced participants’ knowledge but also provided critical networking opportunities with established professionals.
Since its official recognition, SURGIL’s Academic Committee has significantly improved surgical education and professional development. Through innovative events, valuable collaborations, and a commitment to overcoming challenges, the committee has positively impacted the surgical community. With a solid foundation and exciting future plans, the committee is poised for even greater success.
WHAT TO EXPECT 1. SURGIL Webinar (Themed ‘Carving Career Paths: The Surgeon’s Blueprint’):This webinar serves as an inspiring and interactive webinar designed to ignite innovation in surgery and empower future surgeons in navigating the path to their specialties. This webinar aims to bring together esteemed surgical experts, innovators, and mentors to explore cutting-edge advancements in surgical practice while providing invaluable guidance on choosing and excelling in a surgical specialty. Whether you’re a medical student, aspiring surgeon, or early-career professional, this session will equip you with the insights, tools, and inspiration to carve out a meaningful and impactful career in surgery.
2. SURGIL Surgical Skills Lab (SSL) Workshop & Club: The SSL Workshop aims to explore the transformative potential of Surgical Skills and Leadership in shaping the future of healthcare. This workshop is designed to enhance technical proficiency, foster innovative thinking, and cultivate leadership qualities essential for thriving in the dynamic surgical field. Participants will engage in hands-on training, collaborative problem-solving, and discussions on cutting-edge techniques, empowering them to excel both in the operating room and beyond. Whether you’re looking to refine your skills, expand your knowledge, or prepare for leadership roles, this workshop offers an invaluable opportunity to advance your surgical journey. SSL worKshop is taking a different turn this year as we plan to form the SSL club which aims at consistent training and practice of suturing skills. The participants of the workshop would be induced into the club and would be expected to purchase their suturing kits moving forward for personal practice.
3. SURGIL Mentorship Program: The SURGIL Mentorship Program is designed to provide aspiring surgeons with a structured and supportive environment to navigate their journey in the field of surgery. This program fosters a unique blend of peer-to-peer mentorship (horizontal) and experienced-guided mentorship (vertical), creating a comprehensive framework for growth and learning. Participants will gain insights from seasoned surgeons on skill development, specialty selection, and career planning while building strong, collaborative relationships with peers at similar stages. By bridging experience levels and fostering mutual learning, this program aims to equip future surgeons with the guidance, knowledge, and confidence to excel in their surgical careers.
Editorial Board
SCOPE OF WORK: 1. Content oversight: The Editorial Board reviews and approves content, ensuring it meets the organization’s standards, tone, and style.
2. Setting editorial direction: Board members help define publication’s focus, scope, and editorial calendar.
3. Peer review: The Editorial Board oversees the peer review process, selecting reviewers and ensuring timely feedback.
4. Ensuring quality and accuracy: We verify the accuracy and validity of published content.
5. Representing the organization: Editorial Board members may serve as ambassadors for the organization, promoting its publications and values.
6. Identifying trends and topics: Board members suggest topics or themes for future issues or special editions.
7. Recruiting authors and reviewers: Members invite experts to contribute articles or participate in the peer review process (you may also be the expert!)
PREVIOUS WORKS: - Interview sessions with notable surgeons doing groundbreaking surgical procedures. Members of the Editorial Board get to Interview these surgeons and build a rapport along the way.

Global Surgery Committee
The Global Surgery Committee of SURGIL is a recent development designed to spark change on a global scale through three core components: Education, Research, and Advocacy & Policy Making.
We are a passionate team on a mission to empower medical students and young doctors in the crises this specialty seeks to address and equip them with the skills, knowledge, and support needed to prepare the next generation of surgeons and healthcare leaders.
OUR VISION: To be a leading voice in empowering and building capacity toward achieving health equity by increasing access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical, obstetric, and anaesthesia care in our country and beyond.

Research Committee
SURGIL research team is one of the major contributory arms in SURGIL, primarily focused on advancing surgical research and improving research skills among medical students. By giving members a hands-on approach to research, they get the opportunity to develop their research writing and methodology skills while contributing to impactful research projects. I know what you're thinking...yes, they get to be named authors on the respective papers, following significant contribution.
We do research and everything in between; which includes a dedicated journal club that trains young aspiring surgeons on how to critically appraise research papers. Moving forward, it gets super exciting with other planned research and research-related activities. So, don't miss the chance to join the team and upscale your research skills!
Publicity Committee
What do we do? 1. We work with every committee in SURGIL. Publicizing event they have planned for SURGIL.
2. Responsible for creating, managing, and promoting content to increase awareness, engagement, and attendance for all SURGIL events.
3. We handle communication strategies, design materials, and use various platforms (IG, X and LinkedIn) to reach our target audience effectively.
What we have done in the past? 1. Effectively increased the number of followers across all platforms.
2. Streaming of the SURGIL conference on YouTube, IG & X
3. Increased awareness of SURGIL among medical students across Nigeria.
SURGIL Creatives
What SURGIL Creatives is: The SURGIL Creatives are a dedicated team responsible for enhancing SURGIL's visibility and promoting its activities through impactful visual communication. We collaborate closely with other committees, especially the Publicity Team, to ensure the early production of high-quality graphical content.
What we have done in the past: In the past, SURGIL Creatives successfully designed flyers for webinars, SURGIL activities, and events. They also produced informative infographics to disseminate valuable surgical related health information.
What to expect: We aim to continue this tradition, ensuring the timely creation of high-quality, eye-catching flyers that effectively promote SURGIL's growth and showcase the activities of its various committees.
